Don Dokken is an American rock vocalist, songwriter, and bandleader best known as the founder and front man of the heavy metal band Dokken. Emerging from the Los Angeles metal scene in the late 1970s, he became known for blending melodic, hook-driven songwriting with the power and edge of classic metal. Influenced by British hard rock and early heavy metal, Dokken helped shape the melodic metal sound that defined much of the 1980s.

When I bought Judas Priest’s Sad Wings of Destiny in 1976 I was hooked.
I used to play my little records, my little 45’s, and learn songs by playing to records. Then I would just start writing my own thoughts down… music is really just an escape.

Oh boy, the typical — Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Beatles, Thin Lizzy, all the great bands. I liked a lot of the English bands when I was really, really young.
The first album I ever bought was Fresh Cream… so Clapton was a big influence. I think everybody was influenced by Hendrix. That was the ‘60s.
